This position is within the Research & Development Team.

The Junior Scientist will support scientific investigations and experiments by preparing, conducting, and analysing tests and measurements in a laboratory setting. The role involves handling various laboratory equipment, conducting tests on samples, recording data, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, and working closely with the Chief Science Officer and wider Research & Development and Product Development teams, the post holder will confidently own and deliver key project work as the company moves towards commercialisation of a portfolio of diagnostic tests.

This role will be based in the laboratory in Dundee with potential ad-hoc working from home where specific project activities are approved by the line manager on an exceptional basis. There will be a requirement to travel to meetings and other locations as and when notified.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Project Work

  1. Sample Collection and Preparation:
  • Collect, prepare, and process samples (e.g., biological, chemical, environmental) for testing
  • Label and store samples in accordance with established protocols
  • Develop and refine protocols for handling and processing samples
  1. Testing and Analysis:
  • Perform routine and specialised laboratory tests as directed by standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Conduct molecular biology assays using conventional PCR, real-time PCR, digital PCR, and other diagnostic techniques
  • Follow strict quality standards to ensure your research can be replicated and trusted
  1. Use standard laboratory equipment (e.g., pipettes, thermocyclers, centrifuges, etc) to analyse samples

  2. Record, analyse, and interpret data accurately.

Laboratory Operations, Safety and Quality

  1. Health and Safety Compliance:
  • Follow strict safety guidelines, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling hazardous materials safely
  • Adhere to laboratory safety regulations, including proper waste disposal and sanitation practices
  1. Equipment Maintenance:
  • Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality
  • Troubleshoot and report any equipment malfunctions to the Laboratory Manager
  1. Data Management and Documentation:
  • Document test results, observations, and findings in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) that support product development
  1. Quality Assurance:
  • Participate in quality control checks, audits, and calibration of instruments to ensure test accuracy and reliability
  • Assist in improving and implementing new testing protocols as required
  1. Inventory and Supplies:
  • Manage laboratory supplies and chemicals, ensuring stock levels are maintained
  • Order supplies when necessary and ensure proper storage and labelling

Pay: £32,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
