Band 6 Junior sister/Charge Nurse
JOB SUMMARY:
The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs of care with the multidisciplinary team and patients’ families.
As a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse you will be required to support the senior and junior team in ensuring the needs of our patients are met through the delivery of high-quality care. The role involves working as part of a large multidisciplinary team including the ED medical team, clinical practice educators safeguarding, mental health liaison team and clinical specialties. The Junior Sister/Charge Nurse works clinically including unsocial hours and will be expected to work competently in all areas of the Emergency Department as well as being able to independently take charge of them.
The Junior Sister/Charge Nurse will assist their Team leader with managing their own team of nurses and ensuring they meet their potential. You will also be responsible for link roles giving you the opportunity to drive change and improve standards.

To demonstrate advanced clinical expertise in the care of patients receiving emergency or clinically urgent treatment in the department.
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients on an ongoing basis, coordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.
To accurately assess and interpret clinical information about the patient’s condition prior to medical intervention.
To instigate appropriate emergency treatment and promptly report change.
To manage the clinical workload effectively, ensuring care is prioritized appropriately.
To be actively involved with the ongoing organization of the department, including liaison with clinical site managers to ensure optimal bed usage at all times, paediatric teams and the ED management team facilitating timely admission and discharge of patients instigating escalation policies as necessary.
To assist the team Leader with an identified group of staff, monitoring and documenting the development of their clinical skills, and recording workforce information.
To assist Team Leaders, Matrons and Head of Nursing in recruitment and retention, sickness management and performance management and develop own skills as required.

We have a new, purpose-built department dedicated to providing emergency care to young people and adults ; our local community is at the heart of everything we do. We are fully staffed by a team of emergency nurses, 24 hours a day and have excellent team support from our A&E senior team. We are also fortunate to have a team of Emergency Medicine Consultants and have a strong medical support framework and excellent links with our MDT. We have two Matrons and a team of Senior Nurses who actively support and engage in clinical care.

To ensure appropriate prioritization of emergency department patients.
To act as a resource to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team and patients.
To ensure that accurate records are maintained reflecting both changes in the patient’s condition and the treatment delivered.
To ensure that patients are updated regularly with accurate information, ensuring that this is presented in a sensitive way and one that they understand.
To ensure that Clinical Guidelines are implemented and to be independently involved in auditing practice in conjunction with Team Leaders, Matrons, and clinical practice educators
To ensure that practice is evidence based and with support assist in the development of policies and protocols within the clinical area.
To uphold high standards of emergency nursing care, according to existing policies and standards within the Trust.
To support the process of continuous quality improvement, by assisting in audits, evaluating standards of care, and assisting in the implementation of changes in the light of such findings.
To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.
To organize patient transfers both within and outside the Hospital, escorting critically ill patients as necessary or delegating to other staff as appropriate.
To contribute to the health education of patients and their families, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate advice and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
To actively support the implementation of the Trust nursing strategy and uphold the ethos of the local philosophy.
To be competently skilled in all roles associated with major incidents and decontamination.
To fully understand the business continuity management system and your role in implementing its process.
To be fully aware of your role in the Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) plan and the role of other staff within ED
To be fully aware of Trusts Safeguarding Procedures for adults and children and to be able demonstrate the ability to raise concerns, follow procedures accurately and work with other agencies to protect children.
To facilitate early discharge planning enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals and providing information to community services, as required, to achieve a safe and timely discharge from hospital.
Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust policy and procedures, including intra-venous medication where appropriate.
